Falun, a city located in northwest of Stockholm, halfway between Mora and Gävle, is known above all for its copper mine, “Falu Gruva”, classified in UNESCO World Heritage Site.
A fascinating site that has marked the history of Sweden and is worth a visit if you are exploring the Dalarna region.
A key site in Swedish history
For several centuries, the Falun mine played a central role in the Swedish economy. At its peak, it alone covered 70 % of world copper production : impressive !
This precious metal was notably exported throughout Europe and was used to mint coins, make utensils, or even construct roofs for prestigious buildings.
Today, although the mining has ceased, its legacy remains very much alive. Its influence is even visible throughout Scandinavia thanks to the famous "Falun red", this color so characteristic of traditional Nordic houses, from pigments extracted from the site.
What to see at Falun Mine?
Over time, the mine was transformed into a must-see tourist siteOn site, you can discover:
- The old buildings of the mining town, dating from the 17th century, which bear witness to the life of the miners at the time.
- The gigantic mine shaft, whose scale is impressive.
- Exhibitions tracing the history of copper mining and its impact on Sweden.
- An observation tower, where you can learn more about the owls that have made the mine their home (yes, they really do!).
Should I book a guided tour?
