Gothenburg, a true gateway to Sweden’s west coast, stands out for its vibrancy and elegant architecture, as well as its relaxed atmosphere and maritime culinary culture celebrated throughout the country.
However, this region offers much more: the Gothenburg Archipelago, with its approximately 20 main islands, boasts breathtaking landscapes, perfect for relaxation and water activities.
Heading south, small towns like Varberg, Falkenberg, and Halmstad captivate with their traditional charm and rich cultural heritage. Finally, the preserved nature of this part of Sweden, with its dense forests, fine sandy beaches, and crystal-clear lakes, invites hiking and quiet contemplation.
For travelers seeking authenticity, Gothenburg and southwestern Sweden will captivate you with their rich and diverse experiences!

Gothenburg is accessible by: plane, train, ferry ‎and car.

The city has a international airport, a central train station well-connected, as well as links by ferry from certain destinations.

For more detailed information on each mode of transport, check out our comprehensive travel guide to Gothenburg.

In our experience, spending 4 to 6 days in Gothenburg allows you to see all the city’s major attractions while also taking the time to wander from one neighborhood to another, without the stress of an overly packed schedule.

However, the ideal duration depends on your personal interests and your preferred travel pace.

Exploring Sweden’s second-largest city in a weekend is absolutely doable, but it will leave you with very little time to explore‎ the archipelago or stroll through the gardens.
