If you are a fan of Vikings (and especially of the eponymous series, like us!) or simply a little informed about Sweden, you have certainly heard ofUppsala<\/strong>the fourth largest city<\/strong> of the country.<\/p>

Located approximately one hour north of Stockholm<\/strong>, this historic city has a rich past and culture that extends beyond Swedish borders.<\/p>

Here is a short story of what we discovered during our stay in Uppsala.<\/p>

Although Uppsala is one of the largest cities in Sweden, its centre is relatively small, making it possible to discover most of the points of interest on foot. Just what we like!<\/p>

The first thing we recommend you visit is the Uppsala Cathedral<\/a>the largest in Scandinavia<\/strong>. This impressive building, whose construction began in the 13th century, is visible from the highway leading to Stockholm. It is impossible to miss it, especially since it occupies a central place in the city.<\/p>

Don't hesitate to step through its doors for a free tour. The interior is worth the detour, especially for its tombs housing historical figures<\/strong>, like the king Gustav Vasa<\/strong>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Uppsala Castle (Uppsala Slott)<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

A stone's throw from the cathedral stands the Uppsala Castle<\/a>, perched on a hill and visible from almost every point in the city. This 16th century fortress<\/strong> century was built on the orders of Gustav Vasa and bears witness to significant events, such as the devastating fire that struck the city.<\/p>

Although its exterior architecture remains sober, its pinkish tint gives it a certain charm. The highlight of the visit? The breathtaking view<\/strong> over Uppsala from the castle esplanade.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Just behind the castle, below, lie the botanical gardens<\/strong> from the city. During our winter visit, we observed them from afar, but they must be magnificent in spring and summer, when nature takes back its rights (we would have loved to visit the greenhouse!).<\/p>

Did you know that Uppsala is first and foremost a university town<\/strong> ?<\/p>

It attracts students from all over the world, particularly thanks to its university<\/a>the oldest in Scandinavia<\/strong>. Although modest in size compared to other campuses, its reputation is international, particularly in the field of science<\/strong>.<\/p>

The main building, decorated with statues and full of history, is worth a little detour. This is where many renowned intellectuals studied.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Downtown and waterfront<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Uppsala's center shows a face modern<\/strong>, with its shops, its usual chains (clothing, shoes, etc.) and its restaurant brands such as Expresso House<\/em> or Waynes Coffee<\/em>. But it is especially the little ones cafes and konditori<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>with Swedish charm that seduced us.<\/p>

If the heart of the city did not particularly mark us, the banks of the river<\/strong>\u00a0Fyris\u00e5n<\/strong>\u00a0are however very pleasant for a quiet stroll.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Where to eat in Uppsala?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Having only stayed one day in Uppsala, we only tested one address, but it is worth sharing:\u00a0Forsa Hembageri<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>

This little one bakery-cafe<\/strong> treated us with generous sandwiches and a well-stocked salad, perfect for a quick lunch. The heated terrace and its blankets allowed us a very pleasant break, which is not always easy when traveling with a large dog.<\/p>

The pastries are also delicious, and the prices remain reasonable for Sweden.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

A few minutes drive from the actual center is\u00a0Gamla Uppsala<\/strong><\/a>, L'old town of Uppsala<\/strong>. It is one of the cradles of theviking history<\/strong>, a must-see site for anyone interested in this fascinating era.<\/p>

Fans of the series\u00a0Vikings<\/em>\u00a0may recognize this mythical place, often associated with Ragnar Lothbrok. In the past, Uppsala was home to an important religious center where rites and sacrifices took place, notably at the famous\u00a0Uppsala Temple<\/strong>.<\/p>

If the temple had long been destroyed, it would have given way to a small wooden church, considered the city's first cathedral.<\/p>

On site, explanatory panels immerse you in the history of these places full of mystery. You have to use your imagination, because today, the site is mainly reduced to somewhat deserted hills.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

How long does it take to visit Uppsala?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

For our part, one day<\/strong> was enough for us to explore the main sites<\/strong> of Uppsala in winter. However, the city seems much more lively in summer, which might tempt you to spend an extra day there, especially if you want to explore Gamla Uppsala further and discover its small museum<\/strong>.<\/p>

As you will have understood: if Uppsala did not provoke an absolute crush on us, it remains a must for anyone interested inSwedish history<\/strong>.
